Starting off July with Missoula Downtown Tonight…you can’t really tell, but in the group picture it is pouring rain, so everyone is taking refuge under the tent.
After waiting for the rain to die down, we finally decided to make a run for the car. We got completely soaked. But at least we cooled off (it’s been around 100 degrees this week) and enjoying laughing about it.
The next day, we went to Snowbowl Ski area and rode the lift. There is a disc golf course near the top, so we took some discs and tried out the course. It did not go well. Steve lost two discs that were some of his favorites and we searched for ages. We never found them, and finally bailed on the course.
(side note: about a year later, Steve got a text from someone who had found one of the discs! He told them they could keep it)
Grandma has been teaching Emily to sew by working on some Indepence Day hair scrunchies with her. They made about a dozen and gave them out to various friends to wear for the 4th of July. What a fun project!
For the celebration, we went to the Dukart's house for a party. Mrs. Dukart always makes the most amazing food and the kids enjoyed playing with Megan and Morgan. Afterwards, Emily and I walked to Lewis and Clark Park to enjoy the city fireworks display.
On July 5, we met up with Angus and Lisa and hiked at Blodgett Canyon. We enjoyed visiting with Lisa and getting to know Angus. The excitement of our hike was spotting a bear higher up on the mountain. The funny thing was that we were stopped for a break and several of us were standing off the trail. Someone (I think it was Lisa) was on the trail looking up at us and said, "Bear!" We thought it was a joke! Once we finally realized there really was a bear, we spotted it and took some photos. Brendan had brought a real camera (rather than just a phone), so his picture turned out the best!
July 7 is my Dad's birthday! Since we were leaving before Emily's birthday the 22nd, Fred & Char made it a joint birthday party for the two of them. It was nice getting to be in Montana for both Char's birthday (6/23) and Fred's birthday.
July 9 - we are on the road and stopped at one of our favorite places: The Reptile Gardens in South Dakota
One of Emily's requests was that our hotels have pools. She loves to swim!
The Strategic Air Command & Aerospace Museum in Ashland, NE was very educational and interesting. Hard to see in the photo, but Brendan, Emily, and Steve are sitting on the wall in the photo of the building.
We made it home! July 20 is Emily's last day of single digits. We took some photos of our 9-year-old.
...and here she is at age 10. Happy birthday, sweet Emily! She woke up to family gifts, then got to have her friend Charley over for a sleepover in some special tents. She chose the tent theme, cake design, and picked out matching dresses to wear with her friend. She also chose a pinata for some of the festivities. For her birthday dinner her grandparents came over and helped us celebrate.
A few days after her birthday, we enjoyed a lake day with the Wittenbergs at Tom and Kay's house. Any day we're at the lake with nice weather is a good day!
To finish out the month, we decided to enjoy a little redneck fun at a monster truck show that came through Bentonville. We didn't realize it would be quite so crowded and with COVID still a concern, we were relieved that none of us came down with it.
